Charbonnage du Gouffre is one of the few coal mine to have resisted the bulldozers, although the chassis wheel
and all mining relics have long gone.
Operating relatively recently, it opened in 1916 and will close in 1969. With a beautiful architectural unit, the buildings
are built on a concrete structure with brick infill.
The condition is certainly far from brilliant, but after long neglect, and after passing into the hands of unscrupulous
landlords, it's not a surprise. Having been converted into a zoo between 1979 and 1982, then as car wrecking yard and finally
as a deposit of dead animals sacrificed to a barbarous custom, the Gouffre (Pit) has suffered much but is still standing.
For how long ?
The visit was done in two stages.
If the first solo visit was of a calm almost disturbing, the second was more... special.
We were not alone on the site : a club of photographers occupied already the space, but they were not explorers. The average
age was about 65 years old while models could be their grandchildren. These ladies were not very dressed...
We left pretty quickly.
At the edge of the Gouffre...
Here there are only the skeleton of the building.
The right building housed the hoist machine.
Other buildings stood here.
A gateway started here. It has since collapsed.
The flying stone.
Building where coal wagons poured coal.
Remains of the zoo ?
Probably a lantern attached to coal wagons.
Let's get out of the Gouffre...
