Founded in 1862, the Léonard Giot Foundry initially specialized in copper boiler making, then gradually turned to working with
cast iron, steels and special steels (chrome and manganese). All the steps necessary for the manufacture of metals were gathered
on this site.
Gradually, part of the site will experience new conditions with, for example, a car manufacturing plant, a company active in the electricity
sector or a brewing distribution center.
The foundry will cease all activity in 1978, while the brewing distribution center will cease to exist in 2000. The site has since been
abandoned as is.
In 2004, the authorities took an interest in the site to finally clean it up. Which unfortunately means that all buildings will soon be
demolished. Only part of the facade should be preserved.
The beautiful facade of the foundry, overlooking the rue de Châtelet.
Guided by the kids in the neighborhood, I venture to enter the Fonderie Giot.
This land is easily accessible, houses in the background are inhabited.
On the vacant lot, there are (between the waste and the dross) steel tubes. Probably polls measuring soil pollution.
The "Black Tower", rue de la Fonderie.
The fact that these walls are still standing is miraculous.
Inside the "Black Tower", with what was once an elevator.
Through a ripped wall. Intending to enter, the kids have strongly advised against me.
The abandoned houses of the rue de Châtelet.
An old light fixture of the 50's on a house at the foot of the "Black Tower".
Improvised playground in the rue de la Fonderie. Behind the wall, tons of garbage. End of visit.
