Let's look at the former Rekkem border crossing. Although located in Flanders, it is still a little Mouscron here. As Flanders is still (some) home in the Cité des Hurlus.
The Belgian-French border crossing in Rekkem is the passage for French wanting to go to the Netherlands for... buy tulips. Conversely, the same place is crossed daily for West-Flandrians wishing their stocks of water and lemonade in France. Thus, even in the hour of opened border, it is not uncommon to find customs patrols.
Inaugurated in 1972, it will be totally abandoned last year. The dismantling began a
few weeks ago and... is already been stopped.
Only a few road signs have disappeared but the whole infrastructure is still standing. Vandalized but still there.
Visit at a good windy day...
The main lanes are closed, the traffic is redirected to the old domain for trucks.
42 years to avoid the darkness take over the place...
In the distance, De Sjouwer called in Mouscron the "Belgian Fries packet".
Worn out asphalt...
Technical services have struggled to decide for tracing lines...
Welkom in Moeskroen.
The former offices (all closed) of customs agencies.
Isolated office used as squat.
Obviously, no Belgian or French license plate. Nor Dutch, German or British. Thanks Europe...
Asbestos removal in progress. Or paused. We will therefore remain outside.
Formerly, it was the perfect place to place a speed camera.
The abandoned chair.
In French and English. But not in Dutch...
Cut line. Forever.
Old inspection pit.
The end.
